Joshua Dane Hughes, aged 30, passed away on July 3, 2023, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born on November 15, 1992, in Roanoke, Virginia, and despite being born prematurely and weighing only 3 pounds, 3 ounces, he defied the odds, surviving when given a 5% chance by the medical team.
Joshua had a strong passion for education. He graduated from Western High School, where he held leadership roles and was the class President and Salutatorian in 2011. He continued his involvement in high school tennis and was a member of the NC Young Democrats. He pursued higher education at UNC Chapel Hill, double majoring in Political Science and Religious Studies, with a minor in Philosophy. He later earned a Master's Degree in History from University College London (UCL) and a second Master's Degree in War Studies from Kings College in London, England.
Throughout his career, Joshua worked with the Catholic Archdiocese and the Cambridge Housing Authority in Boston, MA, and was selected for the Presidential Fellowship Federal Program. He served as the Acquisitions Program Manager for the Department of Defense at Space Force Command in Los Angeles, CA, and as the lead researcher for the Department of the Air Force on LGBT issues in the military.
Joshua was an avid reader, with a particular love for J.R.R. Tolkien's works. He was deeply interested in politics and often wrote policy briefs for lobbyists, some of which were published and even used by Senators. He had just received an offer to work for the Joint Chief of Staff on counter-terrorism and had a phone call from the White House to work on policy analysis and distribution.
Joshua was dedicated to physical fitness and enjoyed working out, always carrying his running shoes. He had a strong spiritual connection, growing up in Elon, NC, and later following Catholicism. He cherished engaging in thoughtful conversations on various topics.
